At the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga won 8 awards, including Video of the Year for Bad Romance.
What’s amazing about this story is not so much that Lady Gaga won 8 Video Music Awards, it’s that an artist like Lady Gaga can win 8 Video Music Awards.
Let me explain: Lady Gaga is the anti-popstar. And by any conventions of your successful female popstar, Lady Gaga has no business winning awards and selling millions of records.
Lady Gaga is disorienting.
Lady Gaga is offensive.
Lady Gaga is ugly. She’s been called a hermaphrodite. She is polarizing. She openly stands up for Gay Civil Rights. She refers to her fans as Little Monsters.
Lady Gaga goes against everything that a popstar should represent. Ever since the Madonna popstar of the 80s, it has been the goal of every subsequent popstar to sell records by selling sex appeal. Madonna set the precendent, and it culminated with Britney Spears, who was the youngest and the sexiest. There was a formula to it: brand yourself as wholesome and sexy, then crank up the sex appeal. It worked for Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul, and later for Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and even Mariah Carey.
Lady Gaga did everything wrong – no one says that Lady Gaga is sexy, no one wants to F*ck her; but somehow she has created a movement (that far surpasses anything anyone could have predicted). She doesn’t sell sex, she sells alienation. Her looks push mainstrain audiences away and but somehow she’s wanted even more.
In going against the grain, Lady Gaga has built a platform for self discovery and self acceptance. She has created an army of fans that are inspired to be individuals and challenge convention. She has inspired fashion and made it ok to be different. She is committed to being more than a sex symbol: she is a champion of art and expression. The world will never be same, and as music evolves we will begin to see a movement of popstars that want to be weird – all because Lady Gaga made it ok to be different.
That’s the sucess of Lady Gaga! That’s why she’s so important! That’s why she deserves to win awards and sell millions of records.
